Two Worlds: Fulfilled Life And Living Death

This artwork was created for the EXITUS exhibition. This exhibition was about the theme of death and how we deal with it. The aim was to reduce the fear of death and create space for this theme in

I associate the theme with heaven and hell. For me, these do not exist after death, but while we live.

Heaven is represented in the top part and hell in the bottom part.

The bottom part shows that through our negative thinking and the resulting destructive behaviours, we fall ever deeper into hell and suffer. There it can feel as if we are already dead and yet we are still living. In the same way, we can find the stairs to heaven through our thinking and reach them. Sometimes heaven is hard to recognise because of all the storm clouds and yet it is always there. In heaven, life feels easy and fulfilling. It is the inconspicuous, sometimes hidden things that really take us to heaven such as thankfulness, love/self-love and compassion. Life means walking between heaven and hell, both are legitimate and they alternate. A valuable thought for me is that I can choose where I want to live and therefore I can reach it. We ourselves can contribute to walking in heaven or in hell.
