Resin is the english word for the german word Kunstharz. This resin is also called Epoxidharz oder Epoxy. Resin is a polymer compound consisting of two components: the resin and the hardener. Mixing the two components creates a chemical reaction that causes the resin to cure in air to form a solid plastic. After curing, resin has a kind of glass-like appearance and is translucent and glossy.
To achieve different effects, resin is mixed with colour pigments, among other things. Resin is used in art in different ways, for example, as a protective varnish on paintings, in a casting technique on canvases or for enclosing objects such as flowers, etc.
Resin is toxic in its liquid form, especially when it comes into contact with skin or when inhaled. Accordingly, protective clothing should always be worn when working and cleaning the working materials. This includes among others:
- chemical-resistant safety glasses/lab glasses
- chemical-resistant gloves (preferably several layers on top of each other)
- clothing that covers the skin on arms, legs and torso as well as possible, ideally a disposable overall or protective gown
- respiratory protection mask FFP2 or FFP3
When working, cleaning and curing, the room in which the resin is located should be well ventilated. Never work near food.
