The name cosplay is a combination of the words costume and play. It is understood as a
dressing-up trend that originated with Japanese fans. In the 1990s, this trend came to Europe and the USA.
A cosplayer recreates characters from manga (Japanese comics), anime ( Japanese cartoons), comics, computer games or
films as faithfully as possible through costumes and behaviour. The costumes are usually made by the cosplayers themselves in an elaborate process. In addition to the clothing, objects, animals,
etc. that belong to the imitated character are also created. These are called cosplay accessoires. Both the costume and accessories can nowadays also be bought.
Cosplay is mainly done for fun and for competitions at conventions. The competitions are short appearances by the
cosplayers. In these competitions, the cosplayers act, quote or sing small performances that match the character and are judged by a jury.
In addition to single cosplay, there is also group cosplay. This is a group of several cosplayers from one or more
series. Among other things, they perform small sketches or show fights from the respective series. In recent years, the performance has increasingly been supported by music and choreography.
There are also cosplay show groups that have come together to perform an entire show lasting several hours. In this case, they usually perform this show at several conventions.
